west from Dover… January 1193

January 1193.  A few months back, I posted about two incredible landmarks my crusader knights, Henry and Stephan, would have seen on their return to England. Had they turned slightly to the north and west from Dover, their path would take them past Canterbury Cathedral.

Both knights would know the Cathedral’s history: Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury during the reign of Henry II, had been assassinated there by four of Henry II’s zealous knights in 1170, the year of my Henry’s birth. (Sorry…so many Henry’s!)

The Cathedral is magnificent and I hope you enjoy my pictures though they hardly do it justice.
