Family Peace shipped to editors

It’s done. Keeping the Family Peace (FP) has been shipped off to my editors. Like the thistles in Graham’s photo, it may be a bit prickly, but you can see the broad landscape and this round of revisions is done. The nuking process went well. I think I’ve tightened up my writing quite a bit. I’m anxious for this final round of feedback. *ducks, then runs for cover*

Time to RELAX.

Right.

The thing is, I don’t have nearly the time I’d like for reading and writing. I’m lucky – I really only have the day job competing for my time and energy. Kids are grown and independent (though 1 still lives at home). I did try to talk the boss into setting up an “author in residence”. No dice. It was worth a try, right?

I’m finally into a decent routine with my writing and I do think that’s made a difference. I squeeze in 1 1/2 to 2 hours each weekday, and 3-5 hours each on Saturday and Sunday. Traveling, company, or preparing for an upcoming wedding in October bite into that time. “Writing” has actually been almost all “revising” the last 3 months and that can be frustrating when new ideas are swirling around in the brain.

I did manage to sneak several thousand new words into both FP and into Battle Scars (BS). Now that FP is off my plate for the next 6-8 weeks I am dying to finish BS, my 3 part short story turned novella. The first draft of pt. 1 is done. I’m barely into pt. 2 and it’s rough. Terribly rough. But at least there are words on paper! If there are words, there’s something to edit later. You’ll be hearing more about that in the coming weeks.

So writer peeps – what’s your weekly routine look like?

We’re gong to have to work on your acronym for Battle Scars.

I don’t have a routine. This is problematic. I *try* to have a routine. If I wake up on time, I can get some writing done on weekend mornings before the rest of the household stirs. Maybe 2 hours. But I won’t set an alarm because I’m chronically sleep deprived. Still, I usually wake up on time. Then Tues/Thurs am are supposed to be mine until 9-10:00. Surprising how often that doesn’t happen. I have to work out some time on MWF. I’m looking at sacrificing family time (such as it is) on MW evenings and taking Friday completely off.

No BS, eh? 🙂 Yes, somehow try to make that writing time happen. What’s causing the disruption on Tues/Thurs? There are so many things that butt their heads into the limited time we have – MAKE.IT.HAPPEN! I’m amazed what I get done with these blocks of time.
